Careers Zone and Careers Team update

Written by Cornelia Nelson and Jane McCaldon, Student Information Officers in the Careers Zones.

Byrom Street, Aldham and Marsh Careers Zones have been incredibly busy the past few weeks and we thought we should take the opportunity to look back at what’s happened so far this semester.  Not only have we managed to engage students with a variety of careers fairs and employer events but one-to-one appointments with our team of careers and employability advisers have remained consistently busy.

Let’s start with the  range of exciting events which have taken place. We have invited a whole host of employers to the University to discuss their roles and promote their opportunities to our students. These have taken place all over the University so there really has been something for everyone, whichever faculty or school you are in.

To a name a few which have taken place over the past couple of weeks: Career options with an Animal Behaviour/Zoology degree, Careers following a Forensic Anthropology Degree, School of Law Wine Tasting, Working in Forensics, Nursing Careers Fair, Insight into Careers in Accounting and Finance, Careers in Marketing, Student Volunteer Fair and Careers in Cosmetic Science. Supermarket giant ALDI also visited the Mount Pleasant Campus and talked the benefits of their challenging but highly rewarding graduate training programmes.  All have received great feedback and opened up a wide range of opportunities for students. If you were unable to make it any of these events but would like to know what employers talked about, check out the articles further down the blog to find out how to access slides from the events and read about tips provided by the employers who attended.

Alongside these bigger employer events, we have also had a range of organisations visiting the Careers Zones to discuss their opportunities on more informal, face to face basis with the students. They have ranged from big companies to charities; Hays, Reed, Decathlon, Everton FC, Liverpool FC, Catch 22 and many more. These Careers Zones visits are open to all students and a great way to find out about and understand the range of opportunities that are available in the current labour market.

Our events and employer visits will continue until the start of exams and we have already started to plan and organize our event schedule for the first semester in 18/19. Yes, we are that organised!  Keep an eye on our events website to find out about all of our upcoming events and remember, you need to book onto all events, except employer visits to the Careers Zones, no booking is required for these visits, just turn up to chat with their representatives.

Aside from all of these events, our team of advisers have been incredibly busy seeing students on a one-to-one basis, offering their expert advice. Employability Advisers, Anja Heid, Gwyneth Tyrer, Jenny Hammond, Lynne Jones and Karen Forman have been busy with CV and cover letter reviews, helping with interview techniques, assisting finding part time work and a myriad of help with other things.  These can be booked either by visiting your nearest Career Zone or calling 0151 231 2048/3719.

Our Careers Advisers, Steve Burbage (Law and Business), Liz Harrison (Art & Design and Screen School), Gary Douglas (Humanities), Andy Byrne (Engineering & Tech), Laura Aldridge (Pharmacy & Biomedular Sciences and Sport and Exercise Sciences), Hayley Fallon (Natrural Sciences & Psychology and Nursing & Allied Health) and Linda Graham (Sports Studies, Leisure & Nutrition and Education) have been seeing our students, offering guidance on options after graduating especially to our level 6 & 7 students who will be leaving us in the coming months.

Our social media accounts are a great way to keep up to date with what we have going on and to find out about our events, external job opportunities and availability of appointments so why not find us on Facebook – LJMU Careers – and Twitter – @ljmucareers – where you can stay informed about what is going on in the Careers Zones on a daily basis.
