In these difficult times, there are opportunities to find temporary work in much needed support roles and if you are in a position to undertake paid work and have no underlying health conditions that would put you or those close to you at risk, you could gain useful experience. Many of these opportunities are urgently needed vacancies that need filling in key worker roles. The range of jobs is wide: from extra administrative roles, call centre work, warehouse operatives, to helping harvest crops in agriculture. There is something for everyone if you look carefully and do your research around exactly what your duties will entail. It could also be an opportunity to work for a large company that you might have an interest in pursuing a placement or graduate scheme with in the future. Here are just a few places where you can search for these roles:

  • Careers Zone 24/7 – Check out our job board for the latest opportunities.
  • Social media – Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn will all be sources where you can find vacancies. For example following your local JobCentre Plus Twitter feed to see the latest job opportunities.
  • Unitemps have some remote working opportunities e.g. web developer, research roles: www.unitemps.com.

What you can gain from temporary roles:

  • Feeling valued – You will be playing an important role in society at an unprecedented time. All of those key jobs – from healthcare to food distribution to delivery workers or additional admin workers – are central to the country being able to function at this time. You will be part of this.
  • Building your skillset – As a minimum you will be building your skillset. In most workplaces you will be utilising teamworking skills, interpersonal skills, prioritising tasks, solving problems, working under pressure, and many more skills that will be transferrable into other roles in your future career path.
  • Getting your foot in the door – It is an opportunity to gain experience with an organisation, or in a sector, that you would like to pursue a career with at a later date.
  • Gain experience in a new area – Most of your previous work experience might have been, for example, in retail. Here’s an opportunity to try a different sector and bridge any skills gap in your CV.
  • Flexibility with schedule: work life balance – Temporary work may offer you the opportunity to work as much as you need, when you need to. You may be able to pick up extra shifts, or stick to a minimum.
  • Networks and contacts: leading to work opportunities in the future – While you may have taken temporary work during these challenging times, you never know what this might lead to in the future. Make sure you connect with your work colleagues and supervisors so that you can maintain and build these networks in the future.
