Free online summer course on ‘Sustainability and Employability’ for LJMU students
LJMU lecturer Dr Celine Germond-Duret is running a free online course for LJMU students from any degree background on understanding sustainability and your role as both an individual in society and as a future employee. With sustainability increasingly important across all sectors, including fashion, construction, health, design and manufacturing, this course would make a great addition to your CV! Many of you may have had placement/volunteering/travel plans cancelled for summer 2020, so taking online courses like this are a great way of showing future employers that you have remained proactive to improve your career prospects and to develop your skills set.
Previous participants found the course both enjoyable and highly impactful:
“I took part in the Sustainability and Employability course over the summer as sustainability is something I am very interested in and I wanted to learn more about it and how it could impact my future career. I learnt so much about sustainability that I was not aware of, and it made me realise there is so much more I can do personally, and what different industries should do too. I had never considered how sustainability is incorporated into my field of Film Production, and researching it for the course has really opened my eyes to the issues and improvements the industry needs to address. The course inspired me to look into my field further, and I even went on to write a blog post about sustainability in the film industry! I would encourage others to take part in the course as it is very interesting and will make you consider an aspect of your future career path you may have never thought of before!” (Kelsey Draper, Film Studies)
“Prior to taking the online Sustainability and Employability course I had no idea what this was about even though I had come across the word on many different occasions including on my electricity bill. The course was for 6 weeks and I was able to work at my own pace, doing it at my own convenience with great support from the staff. Through the course, I gained knowledge and awareness on different factors such as water, waste disposal, smoke, food and its effects on the environment and the world we live in. The knowledge gained has enabled me to create awareness among other staff by encouraging them to be cautious on the environment we live in even through correct waste disposal, planting own vegetables and the use of public transport.” (Violet Ruhumbika, MSc Public Health Addiction)
The course will be accessible from 22nd June until September – to enrol, visit https://canvas.ljmu.ac.uk/enroll/A3EH9A

Feedback from Law student Amy after accessing our virtual services
Good morning everyone, hope you had a nice weekend. We’d thought we’d start the week with some lovely feedback Anja, one of our Employability Advisers, recieved from Amy, an LJMU Law student:
“I contacted the LJMU Careers Zone a few weeks ago regarding updating my CV, as I was worried about how the current situation would affect my ability to get a job. Initially Anja sent me resources to help with this via email and offered to phone me the next day to discuss my CV. The resources were comprehensive and the telephone feedback led me to make a few tweaks to my CV. I secured an interview for a job as an assistant fee earner due to these changes, which was over Zoom because of the lockdown. Anja offered to speak to me via Zoom to prepare me for the interview. The video call was invaluable as it made me relaxed and confident, ready for the interview, and she gave me great pointers and tips on how to answer various interview questions which were personalised to my skills. After a second interview, I got the job the next day! I would really recommended getting in contact as I’d applied for many positions without even securing an interview, but then I followed the advice and was employed straightaway! Thanks Anja!
Don’t forget, the Careers, Employability and Enterprise Team is available to help from 9am-4.00pm, Monday to Friday.
The Careers Team is offering remote appointments by telephone, video or email; to book an appointment, call 0151 231 8740, email careers@ljmu.ac.uk or visit the Careers Team website.
