How to gain the best from your telephone or video appointment with a careers adviser

If you make a virtual appointment, we would like to share with you our top ten tips about how to gain the most from your telephone or video appointment with a careers adviser:

Think about what you would like to gain from your appointment

  1. If possible, please try to arrange your appointment at a time when you can talk to the careers adviser privately, and with minimal interruptions.
  2. Think about what you want to discuss during your appointment, and note down any questions which you have for the careers adviser. This is not essential but can help you to focus on what you would like to gain from your appointment.  You may want to have a pen and paper handy or use an IPAD to note down any key points from your discussion with the adviser.
  3. We provide an impartial and objective service. A careers adviser will discuss with you any decisions that you have to make about your future, and will help to signpost you to any relevant information sources, to help you to make informed choices.  However, we will not make any decisions for you!  Our expectation is that students will take ownership of their decisions.

Useful research prior to your appointment

  1. Do some initial research before your interview. Start by reading the bespoke career planning guide related to your subject area, which will give you a valuable overview of career options relating to your degree and is also packed full of useful tips about how to improve your employability.  You can also find a range of useful information in our mini guides.  You can access all of these resources here.
  2. Our ‘Careers Zone 24/7’ website contains a range of digital career tools available to enable you to work on important employability and transition skills at your own pace. It is helpful to explore the resources about ‘planning your career’ before your appointment.
  3. If you want to know how to gain entry to a particular job role, then look at the range of job profiles that can be found on the Prospects website.
  4. Our current range of webinars will also help you to gain a range of useful advice to enhance your employability skills and help you with your job-search, please see here.

Action following your appointment

  1. At the end of your appointment, you will usually agree with the careers adviser some action points which you will need to take. Make sure that you act upon any of these agreed action points, to ensure that you move forward with the next stage of your career planning.
  2. Due to the current circumstances, the graduate job market is in a state of constant change at the moment. Therefore, it is important to keep up to date about labour market trends that will affect the job sector which you wish to go into.  Keep an eye on this Blog page for further news and updates about the graduate job market.
  3. If you need further help, you can book a follow up appointment with your careers adviser to review your ideas. Remember that you can also access all our services after you graduate, as well.

Please note: we also offer appointments with our experienced team of employability advisers as well, who offer a range of important services such as the checking of application forms, CVs and personal statements.
