Become a tutor alongside your studies with The Tutor Trust

It is not always easy to find work or earn money while studying, especially finding the right opportunity that will fit around your studies. Finding the time and energy to do both can be challenging.

However, on 16 November there is an opportunity to find out more about how you can earn £21 per hour by doing meaningful and rewarding work that will look great on your CV.  The Tutor Trust is visiting LJMU offering paid opportunities for students from any programme or year group to be a tutor in the local area.

They will be holding a drop-in at the Careers Zone in the Student Life Building from 9.30am-1pm where you can call in and ask any questions you may have.  If you would like more detailed information, they will also be holding a presentation from 2-3pm in room 206 at the Student Life Building.

The Tutor Trust are a registered charity aiming to help tackle educational inequality in a unique way. Their mission is to ‘transform lives through tutoring’ by making sure every child who needs some additional academic support can access a great tutor.

But the opportunity to help transform children’s lives is also an opportunity to help yourself.  As Robert Heinlein said, ‘When one teaches, two learn’.

Transform lives and earn while you learn.

Tutoring is a chance to create meaningful, lasting change by becoming a driving force of empowerment and helping to build a brighter future through the instrumentation of the minds in charge of shaping tomorrow.  It also offers the prospect of personal as well as professional development, including the honing of leadership skills, creating career and business options, augmenting your portfolio of achievements and, not least of all, supplementing that sparing student income.

Offering a flexible schedule that works for you (you must be able to work at least 3 hours per week but can take on as many hours as you want), you will also benefit from bespoke training and mentorship to support you with producing your own lesson plans and delivering high quality lessons.

It doesn’t matter what degree course you are on and you don’t have to want to follow a career into teaching to become a tutor for the Tutor Trust. However, if you are interested in pursuing a teaching career, The Tutor Trust is a great way to build experience in a school environment.

The Tutor Trust provides a real platform through which to make a difference, fashion progress and improve lives.

Hear from your peers:

Rachael Dobbin, an LJMU Psychology student, has worked for the Tutor Trust for over a year and has gained ‘many skills through tutoring’, as well as achieving a Level 2 Safeguarding Children qualification working with youngsters from different backgrounds, of different abilities who express themselves in various ways, which enhanced more communication and problem-solving skills. Rachael says, ‘My favourite thing about working for the Tutor Trust is the sense of reward I get after every lesson! I actually feel like I am making a difference to people’s lives, and that I am doing something worthwhile’ and recommends challenging yourself by taking as many of the opportunities available as you can.

The scope of continuous professional development (CPD) within the organisation also allows for individual growth and can lead to further opportunities. After tutoring with the Trust for two years, Ellie Cross ‘wanted nothing more than to help with the bigger operation of providing every child with quality tuition’ and in May 2022 became the first LJMU alumna to be promoted to a managerial role within the Trust.’

Take as many opportunities as you can. Challenge yourself!
